We joined millions across the country last week to celebrate the most important meal of the day. 

The Farm Burscough, Tea Room and Restaurant, joined food producers, farmers and restaurateurs across the country in marking the national “Farmhouse Breakfast Week.”

From “The Farm” Breakfast Omelette, Welsh Rarebit, Fruit Salad, English Crumpets or a classic Eggs Benedict with Smoked Haddock, there was something a little different to try each day at the Martin Lane Tea Room during the last week in January.

Farmhouse Breakfast Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast and demonstrate the variety of breakfast foods available in the UK.

All stages of the food chain, from farmers to food producers and retailers to consumers were encouraged to hold events to promote the importance of starting the day with breakfast and to celebrate the wealth of wonderful produce available around the country. 

Cathy Grice, co-owner of the Farm Burscough, said: “All farmers realise the importance of a good breakfast because you need to start the day with enough fuel to keep you going. 

“We are renowned for our breakfasts in West Lancashire and they are one of the most popular choices on our menu. More and more people are realising that having a good breakfast is a great way to get your metabolism going and stop you snacking – and just because you have a cooked breakfast does not mean it has to be unhealthy!”

Don’t worry you will still be able to choose from our usual Farm Burscough breakfast menu including our popular Full English and Vegetarian Full English, but we would encourage you to come along and try something a little different too.

It has been a busy few weeks on the farm with lots of hay and straw to combine and bale. Although the pictures you see here were taken in August, Bill and David have been out with the tractors once again so we thought it would be a good time to share the shots with you.

As you see David is doing the baling on the tractor while he lets his dad do the real manual work humping the bales on the back of the trailor.

And we all though David was the daft one! At least Bill got chance for a little rest before the next load!!

New Play Area

We have installed a new children’s play area in the Tea Room Garden in time for the summer holidays.

The facility is free to use for customers enjoying the fantastic menu in the tea room & restaurant and is suitable for children under 12.

The play area includes swings, a slide, turret and small climbing wall.

We have also placed a vintage tractor called “Dexter” for children to sit on.

 You can enjoy a meal, snack or drink in the garden seating area. The facilities are free for customers and children must be supervised at all times.

The Dream Team: Happy with their latest project!

We have built a new play area at the farm to add another attraction – just in time for the summer holidays.

After two days of blood, sweat and tears we managed to create this fantastic new area which includes a Fort Tower, slide, swings and small climbing wall.

Anyone under the age of 12 can use the facility for free while visiting our tearoom garden.

We hope to welcome you soon.

The play area is for children 12 and under, adult supervision is required at all times. The Farm Burscough accepts no liability for accidents or injury on its premises.

From Small Beginnings: We got there in the end though!!

We have had some new arrivals at the Farm in the last week – in the form of five beautiful baby pigs.

The cross-breed of Saddle Back and All Black pigs are doing well and are at their happiest when running through all the daisies in the field.

They are drinking plenty of milk from mum and seem to be very happy at The Farm Burscough. Why not come along and say hello. They can been seen playing in the field behind our little campsite.

William, Charlotte and Uncle David on the market

We were out in force again this weekend with three farmers’ markets to attend.

As you can see from our picture William and Charlotte went along to help Uncle David and cousin Becky at Cedar Farm, on Saturday, where we have a stall selling our homegrown vegetables and homemade produce including our award winning curds and our delicious free range eggs.

Meanwhile Bill was out at Prescott on Saturday and then to the new Farmers’ Market at Burscough Warf  on Sunday.

Don’t worry if you missed us at the market as all our wonderful produce is available to buy in our farm shop and used in our tea room and restaurant on Martin Lane.

William and Charlotte on the Trail

After “enjoying” a Royal Wedding Garden Party a little too much; Dad, William and Charlotte needed to walk across the Mere yesterday to go and collect the family car!

It was a delightful stroll which certainly helped to blow away the cobwebs of the day before. Linking to our own farm walk, the new trail takes you alongside many of the lakes and wildlife areas to finish up at the front entrance of Martin Mere WWT. You also pass by the new canoe-safari route which has just been launched as a new visitor attraction. More on that soon in another posting!

It took us around 40 mins to walk to Martin Mere and we took our time to have a good look at the wildlife along the way including geese with their goslings and a great variety of butterflies which were enjoying the new meadow areas and hedges.

William Points The Way

The Farm Burscough is signed along the walk from Martin Mere as you can see being stylishly modelled by William above. The walk was a great tonic for when you are a little “tired” from the recent festivities.

Three Generations Get Planting

We have been busy planting our main crop potatoes this week which should be ready by around June or July.

We have put in Ambo variety which have proved very popular sellers in our shop and also at our famrer’s markets. We were one of the first in the North West to grow this variety a few years ago and have awards for the tasty tatty.

Three generations helped to get the crop in the ground as William joined Bill and David while he was off school for the Spring Break.

You can see from our pictures that the weather helped us out while we were in the field, but a bit of rain in the evenings would be quite welcome to give them a boost in the early stages. Hope you enjoy seeing what we have been up to!
